Mr. T. Thomas started his career, in 1950, as an Industrial Engineer with the Indian subsidiary of Unilever (Hindustan Lever Limited – H.L.L.). He became Chairman of the Company in 1973.
Mr. Thomas joined the Board of Directors of Unilever Plc, London, in 1979. He was responsible for consolidating the Worldwide Specialty Chemicals Group and making it one of the major profitable and growing Product Groups in Unilever.
After his retirement from Unilever Plc, in 1989, Mr. Thomas took up the assignment of a Visiting Scholar at the Sloan School at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, MA, for a year (1989-90) and taught a course in Global Strategy to MBA students.
He was appointed to the International Advisory Board of Lafarge, the French Cement Company, from 1986 to 1992.
On his return to India in 1990, Mr. Thomas set up the Indus Venture Capital Fund, modeled on Venture Funds in the USA.
Mr. Thomas has majority ownership in three medium-sized companies’ viz. ITTI (an IT Company), Conzerv Systems (Energy Management Company), and, Global Pharmatech (a Pharmaceutical company), all based in Bangalore.
Mr. Thomas served as non-executive Chairman of Glaxo (India) from 1992-1998.
He was non-executive Chairman of Lafarge (India) from 1999 to 2005.
He is the Chairman of the “Business Standard”, a leading financial daily, in India, which is associated with the Financial Times of London.
He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Cathedral School, in Mumbai, India; and, of the Trust of St. Thomas (erstwhile Anglican) Cathedral, in Mumbai, India.
Mr. Thomas has been closely associated with the Missionaries of Charity, since 1976.
